Get Lucky by Katherine Center

Remember the video essay about motherhood by Katherine Center that I posted (and we all bawled our eyes out)?  She was at the the Mom 2.0 Summit conference that I attended back in February and she mentioned that her new novel, Get Lucky, would be available in April.  Get Lucky is a story about two sisters, written by a Houston author--need we say more?

First: I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Loved it! The characters were full and rich, the story line was complex, a very entertaining read. I very rarely cry when I read a book – let’s face it, I rarely cry, period. But when Sarah was in that job interview, I boo-hooed all the way from ‘what’s your favorite period of architecture?’ to when Sarah got back home – and then I think I cried a little more.

Next: It was nice to know (even though while fictional) that my sist3rs and I aren’t the only one with a dysfunctional family, or even for that matter, dysfunctional situations. While some of the scenarios might have been a bit over-the-top, they were all believable.  I have to say that Dixie was the icing on the cake – boy is she a pistol! I would love to take one of her self-defense classes!

I really loved Katherine’s style of writing – witty, feisty, heart-felt…well done!!

At this point in my life, I definitely can not see myself pregnant, but if it were ten or even fifteen years ago and my sisters needed a baby or any other body part that was an extra for me, I’d give it to them or do it for them in a heartbeat! What are sist3rs for?!

I have to say NO to both my sisters for Surrogacy...just having one of my own at 41 --I am STILL trying to get back on my feet.  A kidney...SURE.

But, because of my situation, I really enjoyed reading this book  I knew exactly where the main character Sarah was coming from with the hormones.  I didn't quite understand why she was fired, since in this day and age most of those things are now acceptable.  I loved the end when she gets the happy ending...we all deserve a happy ending.

I would definitely read another one of Katherine's books, actually, I am looking forward to it.  Maybe a continuation of Sarah with her own family and trying to handle her family while dealing with the ones she gave birth to for her sister?  Ohhh I don't know..but I do know whatever Katherine comes out with...I will be ready to read it!

There is not a thing that I wouldn't do for either of my sisters.  Surrogacy?  Sure.  Need a Kidney?  No problem.  I think that's why I liked the premise of Get Lucky and wanted to read it.

I thought some of the issues that crept up along the way were interesting.  Things that wouldn't occur to me in advance if I were in the same situation.

I've said it time and time again that I'm the biggest, corniest, cheese ball I know, so I rarely have a problem with corny moments or corny endings--and I definitely classify '99 kisses' in the corn and cheese file.  Then again, I'm a literary moron, so what do I know, anyway?  I liked the story.  I liked the writing.  And I would definitely be interested in reading more of Katherine Center's work.

Here's my real question...would Lise or Niq be willing to give birth to my baby or cough up a kidney for me?  Would you do the same for your own sibling?

Have you read Get Lucky?
What extreme lengths would you go to for your sister?
Tell us your thoughts!

Upcoming Sist3rs Chick-Lit Book Club selections...

September: Seven Year Switch by Clair Cook

October: TBD

We have nothing against Oprah's Book Club. In fact, we have all read some of her picks and have even enjoyed them (on occasion). Sist3rs Chick-Lit Book Club, however, is a different kind of book club. We're picking fun, light, easy beach blanket reads and we're inviting you to read with us. There's a time and a place for Oprah's thought-provoking, learn a lesson, deep reads--but this is not the time nor place

Life gets busy and sometimes it's good to be able to read a few pages here and there without losing the entire story. We're interested in reading fun chick books. If we were talking about movies, we would be the girls going to see the chick-flicks with you. So, come have fun with us! We'll be back here to post about the books we read and we hope you'll be back to tell us what you think about them, too!
